Sarah Ball (b. 1965, Yorkshire, UK) is a British painter.
Sarah Ball's practice is rooted in the construction of narrative and identity. Working from photographic sources, sometimes drawn from social media, and at times staged, she depicts individuals not in pursuit of likeness but as fragments of stories yet to be told. Faces, gestures, clothing and ornament become narrative cues through which the viewer might imagine the person beyond the image. In this process, identity itself becomes a site of construction. Moving beyond conventions of portraiture toward a more expansive form of narrative painting, Ball's works occupy a space between the photographic and the fictional: meticulously painted yet deliberately open-ended, they offer a sense of ambiguity that invites the viewer to complete the narrative.
Influenced by Flemish and Tudor portraiture, as well as filmmakers including Roy Andersson and Jacques Tati, Ball's work gives equal weight to what is shown and what remains unsaid. Her work explores the ways in which creativity, theatricality, style and individuality become mechanisms of authoring and performing versions of ourselves. Ball extends this process of self-fashioning through painting itself: visible linen, thin, translucent layers of oil paint, and textured surfaces reveal the painting's own construction. Subject and material therefore become inseparable: as the image shifts away from photographic reality through the process of painting, so too does our sense of the person it depicts.
Seen collectively, Ball's works move beyond the individual to form a chorus of contemporary identities. While each figure is distinct, her consistent visual language places them within a shared world, transforming a collection of singular encounters into a portrait of a generation. Ball leaves the narrative deliberately unfinished, giving the viewer space to imagine who these people might be and, in doing so, revealing as much about the viewer's own ways of seeing as about those depicted.
