A selection of new works by Rirkrit Tiravanija created during a residency at Next Door to the Museum Jeju – including ceramics, two new newspaper paintings on traditional Korean scrolls, a flag, a special compost vessel and food – is on view as part of ‘Flowing Moon, Embracing Land’, the third rendition of the Jeju Biennale.

For ‘Untitled 2022 (submit to the black compost)’, Tiravanija drew on Edouard Glissant’s instructional poems to facilitate an interactive art experience during which participants are brought into relationship with one another as well as with particular moments in Tiravanija’s encounters on Jeju island. Upon Tiravanija’s departure from the residency, plans were left for an hour-long interactive experience to be conducted with each group of five visitors attending Next Door to the Museum Jeju.

The visitors are guided through the site of the installation, which includes private quarters where Glissant's 1969 poem ‘Do It’ is written on the wall, translated into Korean. Participants may paint a portion of the poem—thus submitting to the black compost—in Korean script on t-shirts or fabric they bring. The natural paint used in the silkscreen printing process is made from locally sourced Jeju clay.

<Untitled 2022(submit to the black compost)>deals with a story of the relationships surrounding the cycle of life and sharing, which emerge from creating and contemplating in public and private spaces where people come and live together.
