Overview
This autumn the Garden Museum will hold contemporary German artist Sabine Moritz’s first UK museum exhibition.
Looking back at her childhood growing up in East Germany, Moritz explores imagined memories and encounters with the natural world through richly textured sketches and canvases that feel both intimate and emotive, most of which have never been exhibited before.
Landscapes of plants encroaching on brutal concrete tower blocks, floral still lifes and a new vast abstract work painted especially for the exhibition will take viewers on a journey of memory, family, home, displacement and the escape that nature can provide in an urban setting.
The exhibition demonstrates, via the conduit of the garden and nature, how Moritz works through modes of figuration and abstraction. Many of the works in the exhibition draw on her recollections of growing up in the German Democratic Republic before departing to West Germany as a teenager.
